Robert Durst, a real estate heir and subject of the 2015 HBO miniseries “The Jinx,” claimed in court papers filed on Friday that he was high on meth throughout the show’s filming, including during interviews he gave, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The series focused on Durst’s connection to three tragedies: the disappearance of his wife in 1982, the murder of his best friend in 2000, and the murder of Durst’s former neighbor, whom Durst admitted to killing in self-defense. The final moments of the series aired footage of Durst caught on a hot mic muttering, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”

In this newly filed transcript of a March 15, 2105 interview from jail, Durst told authorities, “I was on meth, I was on meth the whole time…it should have been obvious,” seemingly to explain why he admitted to murdering a bunch of people. “I think the reason I did it had to be because I was swooping, speeding,” Durst wen on to say.

Durst had been arrested the previous day in New Orleans, where he’d checked into a hotel under a fake name and amassed more than $40,000 in cash, a mask, marijuana, and a revolver. He is currently serving a seven-year sentence for illegal possession of a firearm in Southern California, and has since been charged with the murder of his friend Susan Berman, to which he has pleaded not guilty. Durst is awaiting trial.

At another point in the March 15 transcript, L.A. County Deputy District Attorney John Lewin asked Durst why he never considered leaving the country before the HBO series aired, to which Durst responded he’d been experiencing “inertia” at the time.

“I just didn’t really, really, really think that I was gonna end up arrested,” Durst added. Meth is a hell of a drug.
